About the Book: Osiris “Oz” Aquino is an underprepared Navy officer put in command of seven castoff Marines on a research starship that wishes it didn’t have to have them. His sergeant is hostile, his Marines have records full of infractions – not to mention that they’re plagued by old weapons and missing supplies due to budget cuts – and the crew and scientists would rather have nothing to do with him.
As the ship approaches the planet it’s investigating, they find plenty of signs of intelligent life – in the form of ruined cities and skeletal remains. The only things living in the ruins are adorable aliens, something like a squirrel crossed with a monkey, which the researchers dub squonks. Two are brought aboard for “scientific study,” aka the lucrative market for exotic off world pets. But the corporations underwriting the mission haven’t properly studied the lessons of GRRM’s “Sandkings” or the movie GREMLINS. Soon enough, the squonks are loose in engineering, the crew sent to investigate aren’t coming back, and Oz and his team have a fight on their hands.
Two ticking clocks are left for Oz to contend with – one to defeat the squonks and restore safe access to engineering before the crew on the ship run out of air, but to figure out what turned the squonks from cuddly to killer in time to keep those who’ve evacuated to the planet’s surface from suffering a similar fate.

Jack Campbell (John G. Hemry) is a retired US Navy officer who writes the New York Times best-selling Lost Fleet series and whose books have been translated into fifteen languages and sold four million copies worldwide. His most recent novels are In Our Stars, the first novel in the Doomed Earth series, and Implacable, the third book in the Lost Fleet Outlands series. The Lost Fleet Universe story collection Rendezvous at Corsair also came out this year. He’s the author as well of the Genesis Fleet and Lost Stars series, as well as the “steampunk meets high fantasy” Pillars of Reality, Legacy of Dragons, and Empress of the EndlessSea series.
He’s had numerous short stories published dealing with alternate history, time travel, SF, fantasy, and humor. His YA novel The Sister Paradox won the 2018 Epic ebook award.
